Three more people have been diagnosed with E coli following an outbreak at a primary school.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said a total of five people have been infected - and presumed tests on seven more would come back positive.

Feltham Hill Infant and Nursery School, in Bedfont Road, Feltham, shut its doors last Wednesday after two children were diagnosed with the bug.

The HPA said it was currently looking at 13 other people who had reported symptoms, but it had not closed Feltham Hill Junior School - which is on the same site - because none of its pupils or staff had been infected.

A spokeswoman for the HPA said: “The Health Protection Agency’s decision to close only the Feltham Nursery and Infant School is because only those children who attend this school are the ones most at risk of infection.

“The closure of the nursery and infant school is to limit onward transmission of the infection within the school and the community and to allow an opportunity for a thorough deep clean of the school.

“There have been no confirmed cases of E coli O157 at the junior school. That is why we have not closed it, however we are continuing to monitor the situation.

“Good hygiene is the most effective way to prevent the spread of illness, such as washing hands thoroughly after using the toilet, handling raw meat, before meals and after contact with animals.”

Parents will get the chance to question the HPA at an open meeting at Feltham Hill Junior School at 6pm tonight.
