FOKER'S DVD REVIEW - A CLOSED BOOK

Posted on 11:39pm Tuesday 9th March 2010

A Closed Book would be very much at home as a theatrical thriller playing at the Fortune theatre in Covent Garden. You would also no doubt leave the building with the feeling that you’ve been entertained by some top notch actors. Now here’s the thing…as a movie the whole thing seems somewhat corny and would feel at home as a sinister episode from the much loved 80’s TV series ‘Tales of the Unexpected’.

MARK FOKER'S MOVIE REVIEW - THE WOLFMAN

Posted on 8:59pm Tuesday 9th February 2010

First of all I must admit that I’m a sucker for a good werewolf movie and as a child this slice of the horror genre always held a fascination for me (maybe I need psychiatric help?). From 1923 to 1960 Universal Pictures was the king of horror movies and they have taken their 69 year old classic ‘The Wolfman’ and remade it for a new audience.

MARK FOKER'S MOVIE REVIEW - THE HORSEMAN

Posted on 3:27pm Monday 2nd November 2009

When I was invited to review The Horseman, all I knew about it was that it was a ‘Revenge movie’ and my immediate reaction was that I’ve probably seen it all before. How wrong was I?

FOKER'S MOVIE REVIEW - '9'

Posted on 4:17pm Wednesday 21st October 2009

“WHEN OUR WORLD ENDED THEIR MISSION BEGAN” reads the advertising slogan for the new animated movie ‘9’. Not to be confused with the live action musical ‘Nine’ due out this Christmas.

FOKER'S MOVIE REVIEW

Posted on 1:28pm Tuesday 13th October 2009

‘Couples Retreat’ goes on release in the UK on October 14. However, the latest word from our friends across the pond is that it has knocked horror comedy ‘Zombieland’ off the number one spot in the US. It’s fair to say that ‘Couples Retreat’ could be Universal’s sleeper of the year.

FOKER'S MOVIE REVIEW - INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

Posted on 12:55pm Tuesday 18th August 2009

I have to say that this is possibly Quentin Tarantino’s greatest work since Pulp Fiction. What we have here is a World War II movie created in his very unique style. Tarantino pays great attention to detail with imaginative costumes, impressive production locations in France and Germany plus a cast of respected award winning International actors but he also ‘crowbars’ in a storyline that you won’t find in any history books.

FOKER'S MOVIE REVIEW - PUBLIC ENEMIES

Posted on 11:03pm Tuesday 30th June 2009

John Dillinger was probably the most famous gangster in American history and it’s hard to believe that his fame only lasted 14 months from May 1933 to July 1934. It’s this period in Dillinger’s life that director Michael Mann invites us to experience. From the very opening prison break sequence Dillinger is already ‘Public Enemy Number One’, no background story just a suave, calculated outlaw. An anti-hero to the people more Butch Cassidy than Robin Hood who robbed the very banks that were the prime cause of the depression and he gave the finger to the government who were incapable of repairing the damage (all sounds very familiar?) and who better cast to play this master criminal than Johnny Depp?

FOKER'S MOVIE REVIEW - 'STAR TREK'

Posted on 10:28pm Tuesday 12th May 2009

I’d like to thank a certain Jeffrey Jacob Abrams for bringing back a popular classic to our cinemas. Back in the day, Star Trek was one of the most popular TV programs in the Universe, well at least in my little corner of Surrey. And to think it only ran for three years from 1966 to 1969. Then in 1979 Star Trek The Motion Picture hit the screens and the franchise continued into the early 90’s until The Next Generation took over.

CORALINE

Posted on 9:18pm Tuesday 28th April 2009

Coraline is based on Neil Gaiman’s 2002 international best-selling book and his story has been brought to life on the screen by "The Nightmare Before Christmas" director Henry Selick. “No surely you mean Tim Burton” I hear you say. Although Tim Burton wrote and produced “The Nightmare Before Christmas” Henry Selick deserves the credit for introducing us to some marvelous stop-motion animation. “Coraline” has this similar quality and is the first high definition, stop-motion animated feature to be shot in 3-D.

FOKER'S MOVIE REVIEW - FAST & FURIOUS

Posted on 3:48pm Thursday 9th April 2009

I felt like a bit of an imposter attending the preview of number 4 in the series without having seen 1, 2,or 3 and clearly even the media audience I was with were obviously big fans as many whooped and wooed all the way through. All I knew was that it was bound to involve plenty of cars racing, chasing and crashing.
